What Is Life Really Like in Scotland? A Local’s Guide to Scottish Living, Banter, and Culture

If you’re curious about what it’s really like to live in Scotland, you’re in the right place. I’ve spent almost all my life here—growing up in a small rural area before living in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and even spending time in the windswept north east. Scotland isn’t just castles and dramatic landscapes (though we do have plenty of those); it’s a country of warm banter, rainy days, deep-fried everything and close-knit communities where everyone has a story to tell.

While I sometimes wish Scotland enjoyed the same level of global tourism hype (and investment) that Ireland does—our villages and towns could do with a bit more sparkle—there’s also something wonderful about the peace and quiet here. The stillness of the hills, the deserted beaches and even the drizzle-soaked pavements offer a sense of calm you don’t always find in more tourist-heavy destinations. If you want to know more about the quirks of Scottish life, from classic banter to the best fish and chips, you’ll find lots to explore on my site.

I write novels set in Scotland, inspired by real-life places and people I’ve known—so if you’re interested in stories rooted in Scottish settings (romance, humour, a bit of magic and mayhem), you’ll find book recommendations here too. Don’t miss my other posts about moving to Scotland, local slang, the home-made fun of my own Scottish wedding and more. Whether you’re thinking of relocating visiting, or just want to laugh at the ups and downs of Scottish life, there’s plenty here to read, explore and enjoy.
